ztv (zvi) / visibility analysis & terrain modelling

urban visibility assessment

Citrine UK Ltd has been pioneering a new ZTV (zones of visual influence) technique to take account of built form in the cityscape - using building height data for central London we have been working with London based architects, planners Halpern and Aspect Landscape Planning - we have produced visibility studies to help develop a prominent site within the city masterplan - our specialist services include preparing virtual tall buildings studiesclick to see larger versionreality fly-throughs over the city and modelling the visibility of different building proposals to assess their relative impact on the skyline

unique and exciting about the development is that now we can quickly represent an urban area in a virtual reality model because we have developed a way of processing raw survey height data to make it useful for a variety of analyses using our terrain modelling software

the benefit is that we can predict where a new building will be seen from in the overall cityscape in a way which is accurate and has a scientific basis, rather than relying on guesswork or expensive visualisations - line of sight analysis to show visibility of proposed building (red) - also indicating visibility shadows cast by existing buildings (blue)the implications are wide ranging, since our virtual reality model will allow you to 'fly' around the city and look at the impact the proposals will have more quickly and from any location - a more sophisticated level of analysis can be used to predict on a plan the precise locations and magnitude of visibility of a new skyscraper, aerial mast or community wind turbine

ztv studies are commonplace in the planning and development process but we believe we are the first to accurately take account of buildings in the surrounding area - a step forward in raising the standards of our urban environment

"The visibility analysis undertaken by Citrine was very valuable in support of our preparation for the public enquiry."

wind farms

click to see larger versionCitrine UK Ltd has been involved in the preparation of before and after photomontages and visibility analyses for several wind farm projects in and around britain both on and offshore

such studies play an integral part in the planning inquiry process - our accurate modelling predicts where new turbines can be seen from and the visual impact on the environment

we provide essential background studies using CAD terrain modelling to assess the visual impact of a development proposal - including visual envelopes, cross-sections and 3D views as supporting primary and analysis for expert witness and public enquiry work - also includes analysis and comparison with mitigation proposals, volumes/cut and fill analysis, slope/aspect analysis and surface contouring - 3D terrain models can be used for interactive fly-through and photo-realistic visualisations
